SANDAG took the high road for its new gas detection system

San Diego Transit’s new South Bay CNG bus maintenance garage purchased a Millennia-DX advanced CNG gas detection system (GDS) manufactured by Rel-Tek Corp. of Monroeville, PA. Installed by Peterson Hydraulics Co. of El Segundo, CA in 2014, the GDS was recently tested and commissioned without a hiccup. The Millennnia-DX system provides a higher degree of safety and easier maintenance, plus it provides unique cost saving dividends in the years ahead.

Special features and benefits accruing to SANDAG and all Millennia-DX system users are listed below.

  • *GasBoss/AP wide-spectrum catalytic-bead gas sensors accept all components of natural gas, including methane and ethane as well as propane and hydrogen, if and when needed.
  • *Long-life sensors; demonstrated in similar installations show 8-10-years MTBF.SANDAG MTA Natural Gas Fueled buses
  • *Sensors are approved Intrinsically Safe (UL-913, NFPA-70, Class I, Divs 1-2). IS avoids costly pressure tested XP conduit and seals on installation, and permits servicing under power without declassifying the area -- a disruptive procedure involving removal of CNG fueled buses from garage.
  • *Permits sensor repair or replacement while under power and without declassifying area.
  • *Fully automatic calibration -- no need for costly manual calibration or bump testing. Eliminates costly technical labor and cuts pricey portable cal-gas supplies, saving a lot money. This utility pays back rich dividends whenever MagiKal does the sensor maintenance job automatically.
  • *Calibrates all sensors on monthly schedule, or anytime on command. Costs pennies per sensor to calibrate, even when using NIST-certified zero and span gases. Cal gas is purchased in inexpensive 6,000 liter tanks that last for years.
  • *High-speed 120 sensors per second data acquisition, even with 12-bit (.0244%) digitizing resolution – activating alarms within 2 seconds.SANDAG Millennia control and monitoring system
  • *Five alarm thresholds; sensor failure, maintenance, low alarm, high alarm, shunt trip.
  • *5% FS sensor/alarm accuracy over life of system; exceeding 10 years. MagiKal is instrumental.
  • *Operating environments cover -40F to 120F with 5-95% RH, with usual dust and diesel exhaust.
  • *Fail safe operation; notification of sensor failure, cable shorts and opens, loss of power.
  • *World-class HMI graphics, icon animation, visible/invisible, color changes, pop-up alarm flags.
  • *Alarm and data logging with date/time stamp, off line viewing utility, automatic file management.
  • *Sensor and alarm logging, pop-up displays, phone and Email messaging. Easy setup and changes without need for factory service; user setup tools and instructions provided.
  • *Automatic report printout showing sensor graphs.
  • *Capability to add remote workstations over client’s LAN. SANDAG gas detection system hardware
  • *Modular physical architecture, expandable to 1,000 sensors.
  • *Programmed attention-grabbing strobes, 20,000 hr lamp life; distinctive warble horns; all low current.
  • *Available “hot standby” backup computer can be added on request.
  • *Employs proven technology; similar installations at notable municipal bus operations nationwide.
  • *Easy trouble shooting; intuitive diagnostics.
  • *Safest technology and lowest cost of ownership, anywhere.
